Challenge Page

Maths

Welcome to TMELA’s Challenge Page

This page is designed to encourage you to think, trial different possibilities and communicate your answers or findings to me.
You can communicate with me (including asking questions) by e-mailing: enquiries@tmela.com.au
I hope you enjoy the activities.
Linda

Here are 3 structures for you to build.  I suggest you copy and paste my block as needed, and paint each the colours you need and build with these using the drawing tools of ordering and grouping to position them as you need to.

You need all the clues put together to build each building.  You may find it easier to physically construct these with real blocks and then represent this on the computer.

BUILDING ONE
  • The two blue blocks do not touch each other.
  • The two red blocks do not touch each other.
  • There are six blocks in all.
  • One of the blocks is yellow.
  • Each red block shares an edge with the yellow block.
  • The green block shares one face with each of the other five blocks.
  • Each blue block shares on edge with each of the red blocks.
BUILDING TWO
  • One of the yellows is above the green block; the other is below.
  • There are six blocks in all, in a tower six blocks high.
  • There is a yellow block on top.
  • The red block is above the green block.
  • No two blocks of the same colour touch each other.
  • There are two yellows, two blues, one green, and one red in the set of blocks.
  • Each of the blue blocks shares a face with a green block.
BUILDING THREE
  • A blue block shares a face with a yellow block.
  • There is a red block on the bottom level.
  • There is a red block directly below a yellow block.
  • There is a green block on the bottom level.
  • There is a red block directly on top of a yellow block.
  • The highest block is on the third level.
  • A blue block touches red and green blocks only along edges.
  • There are three blocks on the bottom level.
  • A yellow block touches a white block only along an edge.
  • There are six blocks in all.
  • A white block shares a face with a green block and two others.

PART TWO

Look at this simple design.

And then look at it from different views.

Front View Side  View Top View

Now you are to draw each of your three buildings from different perspectives – front, side and top views.

PART THREE (if you have time)

Try making up some simple buildings of your own and write the clues for them
Clues need to include very precise language
Draw your buildings separately.
A good process is to have someone else test your instructions (without seeing the answer) to make sure they are clear.
Include the language - faces, vertices and edges when describing your building
Test it with someone else, then send it to me with your 3D computer drawing of it.
